Apparently the average person laughs fifteen times a day. I watched a film recently that quoted that so I don’t know if it’s true but it sounds about right to me. Depending on what I’m doing on any given day and who I spend it with, on some days I’ll laugh a hell of a lot more than that and sometimes a whole lot less.
(Sorry for the quality of this photo by the way. It’s a photograph of a photograph. Also sorry for my 10 chins).
Have you heard of those laughter therapy classes? I think they’re also called laughter yoga. I came across them once – I didn’t see or attend one but heard about them – and they struck me as very odd. Creepy even. The concept behind them, for anyone who hasn’t heard of them, is that a group of people gather and make themselves laugh. I don’t think anyone tells a joke or anything, it’s not like something in particular is done to start everyone off, but the idea is that if you make yourself laugh – like, if you force yourself to fake laugh, you’ll eventually start to properly laugh.
I thought it sounded weird and wouldn’t work.
About a week ago I watched an old episode of Gogglebox and a laughter therapy group came up on there. The Gogglebox viewers were critical of it too, but tried it for themselves and began to laugh. Watching them laughing made me laugh.
So whaddyaknow, it worked!
Whoever said laughter is the best medicine was onto something.
I suppose laughter is a bit like yawning, it’s quite contagious isn’t it? Hearing someone else really laughing can make you want to laugh too.
It also reminded me of seeing laughter flash mob videos about five years ago – I can’t find the exact ones I watched before but here’s an example of one.
It’s a great reminder that something as simple and easy as laughing can have such an impact on our mood. And it can be hard to do when you’re having a hard day. You may not want to – or be able to – make yourself laugh. But perhaps you could find a silly video or meme online that make you laugh or smile.
We’re so lucky to have the world at our fingertips with the internet, just the click of a few buttons and we can transport ourselves to somewhere completely different on the other side of the world. I guess what I’m trying to say is it doesn’t take much to make yourself laugh so try to bear that in mind next time you need a little pick-me-up.
And we could all do with laughing a little more!
