Last week I booked a day off from work primarily to go to a late morning yoga class. I really should do things like this more often, it’s rare that I’d book off a day mid-week to be quite self-indulgent or potter around. If I have a single day off I’d normally take off a Friday for a long weekend to go away somewhere. So it was nice to have a day just because!
I decided I was going to redeem a free pass I was given for Fitness First in Brighton, which allowed me full use of the facilities for the day. I’m not much of a gym bunny, instead preferring classes. As I’ve had a lot of migraines and headaches recently I decided that something slow-paced would be best so made my way to the gym for a class at 10am. Frustratingly, my head was pounding when I got there. I’m not sure if it was a combination of rushing a little when walking to get there on time and getting a little overheated, but it was hurting so much I was didn’t think I’d be able to go in at all. Luckily I had about 20 minutes spare so I sat outside and took some painkillers and drank plenty of water. I had enough time that my headache reduced to a more subtle pain, which was more manageable so I went in.
Straight away I was struck by how lovely the staff were, they were really welcoming and friendly. I was shown to the changing room facilities and where the yoga studio was. I’d also read that they had a sauna so I was thinking about using it after the yoga class but just my luck, it was out of order that day. It didn’t matter too much though as I primarily went for the yoga.
It was a really nice class and the teacher was lovely. I wasn’t the only newbie, there were a few other new faces so she went round and had a quick chat with everyone to talk about their experience and to find out if anyone had an existing injuries. The class was just an hour, which she mentioned was quite short for yoga but she covered plenty – including some poses I haven’t tried before. I’m by no means a yoga expert though, I’ve probably been to various classes around 10 times but I haven’t been to one for a while. It was really calming and relaxing, I’d definitely look at going again – but perhaps at a weekend or else I’ll get through my holiday allowance very quickly!
After yoga I decided to have a slow mooch around Brighton on my way back home. I don’t often go into the city centre, I suppose because the only days I can normally go are Saturdays and Sundays due to working through the week. It’s so busy at the weekends that I will pop in occasionally but will be straight in and out of the shops I need to visit. I don’t spend any extra time nosing around as I get frustrated with the crowds. I think that’s actually why I dislike shopping – it’s the other people you have to battle rather than the shopping itself! So it was really nice to see it on a quieter day and feel like I could take my time without needing to rush anywhere for anything by a particular time.
I bought myself a loaf of gluten free tiger bread and I excitedly bought a vegan, gluten free brownie from Infinity Foods as a little treat. It’s not often I come across foods that are both gluten free and vegan so I thought it’d be rude not to!
I came home and made myself an indulgent lunch – inspired by my favourite bagel on the menu of Bagelman – the Mighty Aphrodite. I filled my sandwich to the brim with feta, avocado, tomato and black pepper and stuck some olives and mini gherkins on the side (only because I couldn’t fit them inside the sandwich!). It was finished off with a cup of tea and the brownie, which was incredible. I felt totally spoiled.
For the rest of the day I put my feet up and did some knitting while watching a film. It doesn’t take much to overdo it for me now, especially as my head had already been bad that morning – so I thought the best thing I could do was take it easy.
Despite the start of the day, it really was a perfect, chilled day off work in Brighton!
I was given a free pass to use at Fitness First Brighton.
