On Monday I went to a Spaced pub quiz and had THE BEST TIME!
It was hosted at the Hope and Ruin pub in Brighton (which has had a big revamp and is actually pretty cool now – quite hipster looking but good food and a great atmosphere, a bit like the Marwood coffee shop, also in Brighton). I think it was the second quiz they’ve run and they plan to run quizzes once a month. I only came across it by chance when I saw friends of mine were RSVPing to the Facebook event and thought it’d be awesome. I invited a few other friends but it turns out, so did loads of other people and there ended up being over 450 people who said they were going.
Luckily, my teammate Oli was wise to the inevitable crowds and got there early – two hours early in fact – and secured us a table. They were turning loads of other people away at the door!
I should have spent more time swatting up. I’m not a true Spaced geek, I do love it but I haven’t seen it millions of times, unlike pretty much all the other teams at the pub! One team had even printed out cheat sheets and were revising before the quiz started.
I did manage to cram in the first two episodes the day before and so learned loads of stuff from the first episode where Tim and Daisy are getting to know each other.
“5 years, 8 months, 3 days”
You could tell that so much time, effort and thought had gone into the quiz itself. There was a picture round followed by rounds focusing on specific characters and sound bites where you had to identify which film a part of the programme was playing homage to, or guess the next line.
Unfortunately we came second to last… (but there were 22 teams full of Spaced nerds!) however we did win a bonus prize for the best team name: Edgar Wright Here Wright Now 🙂 We won a bottle of Kia Ora cordial, wahey!
One of the best parts of the night was a huge all-pub slo mo shootout, which I filmed on my phone:
Next up is Alan Partridge, followed by a Chris Morris special in July and Peep Show in August. I’ll be all over the Peep Show one!
