I find it very difficult to get out of bed in the morning on weekdays. It’s often still dark outside, it’s cold, I’ve been shocked awake by an alarm clock and inevitably I haven’t had a great night’s sleep so am still longing for more shut-eye.
So I started to think about ways I could wake up and feel more positive and alert! I do think it’s possible to get yourself out of a bad mood (it’s been proven that by just forcing yourself to smile you’ll feel happier) so here are some ideas to perk you up before your morning coffee.
Have a cold shower
This is a difficult one to want to do when it’s cold outside but it releases serotonin, the body’s natural mood lifter. Stick to the hot shower to start with (although not too hot as it can dry out your skin) and then give yourself a blast of cool water for the last few minutes.
Go for a run
Preferably before the shower… running really perks me up first thing in the morning. I run round the park near my house and listen to some uplifting music – it really makes me smile.
Have a good stretch
Choose a soft alarm tone
There’s nothing worse than being shocked awake by a loud, harsh alarm noise. My boyfriend has one that sounds like a klaxon and it drives me crazy! It really does wake me up angry! I always choose a soft, slow alarm tone that helps to wake me up more gently.
Take 10 mins to sit down and reflect, quietly. Whether it’s to think about your day (although this should be avoided if it’ll make you feel stressed) or think about nothing at all, this down time to yourself will help to lift your mood.
Get up early
Many people feel better for getting up earlier – it’ll allow you to fit more into your day without feeling stressed or rushed, which means a more productive day.
How do you start the day with a smile?
